This is a picture from our morning. My cereal and juice are on the table sitting there while I finish feedling Lyla her Banana, Apple, Pear combo with a little of my banana also waiting for her to eat. So why post the picture you ask? Look closer. Notice the blood on the bib? This picture was taken at 10:30 am. Lyla and I eat breakfast at 8 am. But this morning didn't go quite as planned. Sometimes Lyla will bite on her high chair in between bites of food that we are feeding her. We don't allow her to do this and try to stop her but she'll still try it every now and then. This morning I went to get another spoonful of fruit for her only to turn and see her biting her high chair. I told her no and went to move her back from the tray but before I could get to her her tooth sliped and she started screaming like crazy. Blood was gushing from her mouth and I began to panic. I wasn't sure if she had pulled her bottom tooth out of her mouth, if more than one tooth was involved or if it were loose. I was afraid if the tooth fell out she might swallow, or worse choke, on her tooth. I quickly tried to look in her mouth but was afraid to touch anything. I saw her left bottom tooth down and in front of her mouth but it didn't seem to be moving. I quickly grabbed a towel, wet it and shoved it in her mouth. Yes, I probably did shove it in which perhaps wasn't the best idea but I was freaking out and not thinking clearly. I called Kyle to have him call the pediatrician because Lyla was screaming so loud I wouldn't have been able to hear her and she wouldn't have been able to hear me I'm sure. As it was when I was talking to Kyle I kept telling him that he just needed to scream because I couldn't hear him. After a quick phone call to the pediatrician we were told to take her to the pediatric dentists office. When Kyle called the receptionist asked if we could come in at 9:30. It was only 8:30 at that point. Are you kidding me??? Did she really want me to wait with my hysterical child who was still gushing blood for an hour? I don't think so! Fortunately she then changed her mind and said we could just come on in since the morning was slow and they would squeeze us in. Thanks! I'm sure to them it's no big deal, it probably happens all the time but for me it was quite scarring. So we left our breakfast sitting on the table and off we went. By the time we got there Lyla had calmed down (I was still shaken :-)...) which was good but then we went in to see the dentist. He had her lay on my chest while I pinned her down and then he looked in her mouth. I had no clue what he was doing but she started screaming like crazy again so I knew it couldn't be good. He ended up pushing the tooth back in place and said that the tooth is pretty secure but at this age her bones are not so the tooth just shifted forward. The bone should heal up in 7-10 days and everything should be fine although if you look in her mouth now the tooth is still a little forward. As we were leaving the receptionist told me I looked pretty calm and I responded by telling her she should have been at our house about a half hour earlier when I was calling my husband. :-) I was anything but calm. As it is, it's been almost 3 hours and my insides are still churning. So now I've got to try to keep Lyla from chewing on her toys. That will be interesting. She puts EVERYTHING into her mouth. Just take a look at the side of her crib. :-( Fortunately she didn't loose her tooth! Hopefully this will be the only incident we have with her for a long time!
